We Have Gone Cashless

Hi Fellow MGC Members,

Areas of Focus for my year as Captain:

  • Sea Front Stabilisation Project
Met on site in mid-August. The way forward is to have an initial information session with members. 2nd Step is to have a member’s suggestion session and finally have a Special General meeting to adopt the agreed upon resolution.
  • Reverse Osmosis Plant Project
Still waiting on CoCTN approval for waste disposal.
  • Sunset Lounge Usage
I am pushing management to increase the catering offering from the club to prospective hirers. Club members can still hire the lounge for R 500.00 for a function, provided they are present and involved in the function.

Amending and Upgrading of our Club’s constitution is being investigated. This is not a quick process and many other clubs’ constitutions are being examined to find the most suitable for us at MGC. The sub-committee will have met twice this month by the time that you read this. Again, once your committee has a recommendation to propose to the membership, we are looking at having an information session prior to any Special General Meeting.

Frank Ncanywa’s Passing

It was with a heavy heart that we heard of Frank’s passing. Our condolences were communicated to his next of kin and loved ones. Many thanks to those members who donated to the fund we arranged for his next of kin and loved ones. After initially deciding to pass the moneys on to the Executor of his Estate, we were approached by member Sona Dass who made the point that his family would need the funds now to pay for the funeral and “after tears”. To this end, we have agreed to facilitate a meeting of his family and loved ones, attended by our GM, Sona Dass, an independent interpreter and myself to agree upon who must get the proceeds from this fund now.

Nat Yamey’s 60th Anniversary

On 1st September 1961 Nathan (Nat) Yamey joined Milnerton Golf Club and, thus,  on 1st September 2021 he will celebrate 60 years of unbroken membership at MGC. Mazaltov on this momentous occasion Nat. He currently plays in the Wednesday and Saturday competition off a 21.9 HI. To celebrate this milestone (is it unique in MGC) he, Max Widan (his very dear golfing friend), Mark Schacht (who has known him as long as anybody) and I will play as a 4 Ball at 12.30pm on Saturday 4th September. He will attend prize giving and, no doubt, wrestle the microphone from my grip and entertain those gathered with witticisms and humorous stories from a 60 year history at MGC. BTW: later in Sept he turns 84 years young.

The Difference

Garreth Johnston (Comm member – Golf Portfolio) was given the go-ahead to widen the fairways at the landing areas, to make the course more playable. Subsequently, we have tried to institute a “first cut” of about 30mm high between fairway and the rough. Members have approached me saying they are confused as to where the one begins and the other ends. Simply put, the difference will become more apparent once the first cut has grown in. Also the areas cut around some greens is not a widening of the “closely mown area”, it is the “first cut”. Please use your intuition and ask your playing partners if unsure.

General Manager: Covid Positive

Mark Schacht tested positive for Covid 19 on 20th August but had already been isolating at home since 16th August. He contracted it from Curtis his son over the weekend of 14/15 August. All Covid protocols are being followed before his return to work and his office, among others, will be “fogged”. Our best wishes have gone to him and his family members who had also tested positive, for a speedy and full recovery.

Stroking and Sponsors

We shall shortly be moving over to our new scorecards which will show our new stroking per hole. We are wanting to simultaneously alter the stroking information on the “Tombstones” situated at the Yellow Tee Boxes. Comm Member Peter Waison is co-ordinating selling advertising together with the new signage on these concrete blocks at the Yellow Tees. If you or your company would like to advertise on this space please make contact with him as soon as is possible.

Yours in Millies Golf

The Captains Desk

Who is our Vice Captain?

Dear Members and Friends

Our Captain set the tone on the first newsletter introducing himself, as he feels the members we representing should know a little about us, I will give a short story.

I was born outside a small village called Campile in County Wexford which is situated South East of Ireland.

Its claim to fame comes from being bombed by the Germans in World War 2 but fortunately only a couple of people were killed. More recently its fame is Tadhg Furlong, a Rugby Player who plays for Munster and Ireland and was part of the Lions Team that toured SA in 2021.

Before I came to SA, I worked for an Irish Engineering Company. We were one of the largest Manufacturing Company’s in Ireland. My position in the company was Construction Manager, where I was responsible for all Site Construction. Some of the Major Projects I was responsible for as Project Manager was 4 Chemical Plants and 6 – 90 mw Gas Power Plants. The reason I came to South Africa was we manufactured a Mobile Rock Crushing Plant, shipped it to South Africa and installed same at the PPC Plant in De Hoek which is ±120 km from Cape Town.

I was appointed Managing Director of the South African Branch where on completion of the Project, I decided to stay in South Africa after been offered a position with a Cape Town Company called CIW

In 1991 a couple of us started a company called SA Five Engineering and construction in the following years we started companies RHM working at Koeberg Power Station where they are responsible for all specialise maintenance and welding, Air Options specialising in design and manufacturing of industrial air handling units PPEW plumbing company some of their major projects were Century City, Tyger Valley and most of the major projects around Cape Town. I was MD of the group up to 2017 where I decided to step back a bit and play more golf but am still involved as the Chairman of the group

I joined Milnerton Golf Club in 1985 and here we are in 2021.

I have been lucky to have won most of the competitions in the Club i.e.

A Division monthly Medal, B Division Club Champion Match Play and Stroke Play.

The highlights of being part of Milnerton Golf Club is been part of the great comrade we have had over the years.

There is much happening that we do not see.

Painting of the Clubhouse and surrounds, upgrading the Gardens around the 1st Tee, and around the club house also many changes as reported by G Johnson on the course.

Remember everyone sees things differently and it is very important for us to prioritise what is necessary and what we can afford. We would all like something better believe me we are trying. Everyone can make a contribution by just not littering on the course and throwing cigarettes buts in the bins.

I personally would like to hear from you all on what we can do to make Milnerton a better Golf Club but please not when I am enjoying a pint, give it to me in writing.

From your Vice Captain

Billy O’Brien

Ladies Captain’s Corner:s

The Ladies Committee is doing very well with organizing our Milnerton Ladies open day that is scheduled for the 30th September 2021. Our Monthly Medal fixture was played on the 3rd of August and the winners are Claire Dinnie in the Silver division and Judy Texceira in the Bronze division.

Our league fixtures for August went well and Milnerton hosted the league teams for the Silver division this month at Milnerton and the Bronze team played at Somerset West.

The ladies that participated in the Western Province Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Golf Tournament at Erinvale Golf Club on the 8th August did very well and I am please to say 3 of them ended up on the podium at prizegiving.

Congratulations to:

  • Casey Hattle | Winner Nett across championship.
  • Runner up mid-am Silver division | Megan de Vries
  • 3rd same division | Nadya Richewald

Milnerton also hosted the Ladies Captains Society on Thursday, 19th August and it was great to meet all the familiar faces and to hear how they enjoy playing our beautiful course.

I wish all our members and staff that are in isolation or sick all the very best and may you all have a speedy recovery.

Best regards
Lorette Hegie

Greens Keepers Course Report

I would like to thank our members and visitors for the kind compliments, much appreciated. The winter rains has helped the course and greens, by flushing sodium though the profiles. This is vital, due to the quality of the effluent water used during the summer months. As winter nears its end and spring approaches intensified turf maintenance will need to take place to prepare for summer months. Hollowtining season, not what you like to hear, but vital to the continued health of the turf. We will endeavour to keep disruption to the golf to the minimum.

Fairways, tees and greens surrounds will be first on the schedule towards the end of September and thereafter the greens in October. I trust that you will bear with us during this process.

Yours in golf.
