We Have Gone Cashless

Here we are 2024 and already at the end of January. My wish for everyone is Good Health for 2024, and the rest should take care of itself.

Some very wise words from our Great Nelson Mandela: Aim high for what you want to achieve. Aim high about the life you want to lead and the difference you want to make. Aim high about the person you want to be. Aim high Because until you do, you will have no idea what you are capable of. It’s not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success.

Onto some business and things that have happened over the last while. You would have noticed the extension to the Pump House, this is a dry room, and we are going to move all the electrical boxes into this room to alleviate the problem we are experiencing with water getting into the electrical boxes and causing them to trip.

We are busy cutting back a lot of the overgrown bushes and trees around the course this to let the sunlight onto the greens and fairways.

Murphy’s Law – we talk one week about the abundance of water supply that we have and the very next week we receive notification from Pots Dam that there will be no water supplied for a while. At time of this report the water supply began again, so hopefully it remains flowing. At least we have plenty water storage !!

AOX Plant commissioned and working well. Hope you have noticed how green the grass is!! A thought to ponder on – The Grass is not always `greener on the other side”.

About the wall along the first fairway. We have completed all the Environmental Documents and are trusting to get the all clear from them to complete this wall and with this the Road will be complete!!!

Look out for the new Distance Markers soon which will have Hole Names. Don’t panic if you do not like the Names – they are easy to change. We did, for a long time, request suggestions for names and not many were forthcoming so if you did not contribute then don’t complain.

Condolences to everyone who lost loved ones over the last few months. Our special condolences go out to our great Friend and Colleague, Kenny Michel. He will forever be remembered, missed and fondly spoken about.

A plague was put on the bench on the 14th tee box by his friends from the Tuesday and Sunday schools. This in remembrance of His great achievement in that he is the Sole Member of Milnerton Golf Club to hold the achievement of a Hole in One on every Par 3 on both the Old Course and the New Course. The 14th being his last Hole in One and where he requested his Ashes be laid.

Our Congratulations go out to Jack Buchanan on finishing 2nd at the Prestigious Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship at the Biltmore Golf Club in Miami, Florida, USA.

He also had the privilege of meeting in person some of the Liv Golf players. He had just finished a Gym session, when Dustin Johnson arrived to Gym, so our Young Jack did not want to miss out on this opportunity, so started his Gym session all over again!

Our Club had the privilege of the presence of Andrew Johnston better known as “Beef”. He is an English player who plays on the European Tour. He is recovering from an injury at present but is hoping to be back on tour soon.  He said he was disappointed that he could not play our course because of his injury. He loved the atmosphere at our club as it’s not found at many clubs these days.

Oyster Catcher seen on our course recently. There are 2 hatching on the course. Look out for them.

Happy Golfing

Lady Captain’s Corner

Hello Golfing Gals

I hope you had a wonderful time during the festive season. Now that we’ve traded in our Santa hats for sun visors, let’s tee off this new year with a bang!

But first things first, can we talk about the weather? January blew in with gusts strong enough to blow the dimples off our golf balls! And don’t even get me started on the heat – it’s like playing golf on the surface of the sun! Here’s hoping Mother Nature decides to dial it down a notch soon. We could all use a little breeze and maybe a popsicle on the 9th hole!

Farewells and Welcomes

We bid farewell to Jenny Whittal and Lemao Motaung, two fantastic members of our golfing family. But as they say, change is the only constant in life! On the flip side, let’s roll out the green carpet for Jenny Shin, who’s rejoined our merry band of golfers. Welcome back, Jenny!

On the Mend

Sending all our good vibes to Michelle Taylor-Rebel, who’s currently playing doctor’s orders. Here’s to a swift recovery and a speedy return to the greens, Michelle! Also, our thoughts and best wishes go out to Marie Junger, who is currently recovering in the hospital. We wish her a quick recovery and hope to see her back on the course soon!

Celebrating Our Golfing Gurus

Let’s raise our clubs and give a round of applause to our January Monthly Competition Maestros:

Putting: Dawn Blackshaw

Way to go, ladies! And let’s rev up those engines for the Harris Cup in February – may the birdies be plentiful and the bogeys scarce!

Warmest regards,

Ntsoti Morojele

Golf Course Report

Happy new year all members,

Our course is not looking that great at the moment mainly due to the affluent plant being down for two weeks and we have had to ration the water from our 7th dam. The other reason is our greens and rough since we have had our Aox system in we have had a tremendous amount of growth in our rough and greens. As far as our greens are concerned the mowers are not cutting the green they are sculpting them because of the thatch on the greens, we have not been dusting our greens at all for various reasons but we have reintroduced this practice which will help the greens not to thatch, hopefully our greens will be back to normal by the time I pen my next report.

The Committee and myself have gone on a clearing up of our course as far as bushes and alien trees are concerned. We believe that Milnerton Golf Course is all about the views our visitors and our members should have the privilege of enjoying, certainly some will enjoy this and some will not. I don’t mind taking the abuse that I  have from one or two members and grateful for the many that have seen what Gary Player has always said “every view from every green and tee should be seen by all of the ocean and the 8th wonder of the world”.

The back of the 12th green does look a bit ugly for now, but it will grow into a manageable hedge and will be maintained as such. The rough on our course has been cut down and please excuse the cuttings lying around but till we get the equipment that’s forthcoming we apologize for this mess.

Happy golfing.

Cheers
Shaun George Washington Buchanan

From the Range

Arno and Franci would like to wish all the members a happy new year with long drives and easy putts.

As the driving range is slowly finding its legs and some new projects planned for next season, we would like to encourage more practice on the range and give each member 2 buckets free to be used on the day of their birthday. We will try and send out a reminder wishing you happy birthday, so if you are interested, please ensure that your contact details are correct with the club.

When you are using the range, please feel free to ask a question if you may be struggling with a certain problem in your game.

We also offer great tour options to our local clubs with our luxurious Limo bus, Arabella being one of our most popular options for a group of 12 players.

I would also like to play a round of golf with more members, so please feel free to contact me should you have an open spot or alternatively, I will try to join a couple of 3 balls soon.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or swing by the range to find out more.

Kind regards
Arno Marais
