Hi Fellow MGC Members
Is it Spring yet??
Nope, it’s still too chilly. However we have had the odd unseasonal South Easterly blowing through, wreaking havoc with the scoring of the unprepared golfers.
The 12th fairway shift to the West is happening and we await the growing in of new sods. The tree forward of the 15th Tees has been hacked in half so that the faders have an unhindered shot off the Yellow markers. This tree must be given a bit of love by an arborist and shaped correctly. The new distance indicators on the “shorts” are a welcome positive addition to our course and thanks go to Peter Waison for organising them.
Further news on the burnt building and the plans going forward will be made available to members as it filters through from the various architects whom the sub-comm have been chatting with. We have applied to the City to lease the Bowling Greens on a “permanent” basis so that our development plans can include that property – primarily for parking purposes.
Congratulations to Gurth “Bokkie” Thompson for celebrating his 90th birthday on 13th July and simultaneously celebrating his 50years of membership at MGC. When presented with his Tie and Johnny Walker Green at prizegiving on 23rd July he produced his first ever prize voucher that he won and it was for a total of R 1.30 !!!
At our monthly committee meeting on 26th July 2022 I was persuaded to take a leave of absence until end November from my position as Captain, as opposed to my request to step aside completely. My reason for this leave is that my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and is to have 16 sessions of chemotherapy by 18th November, two of which she has already had. As many of you have gone through this process will know it is physically and emotionally stressful on the patient and emotionally stressful on the immediate supporting family members and friends. My thanks to those of you who have expressed support and love to Maree’ & I.
Yours in Millies Golf

Flying the Millies flag
I’m very proud to announce that:
- Lorette Hegie was appointed to the Western Province Golf Union Executive Committee on the 27th June at their AGM.
- Keneilwe Moloko has recently been appointed to the GolfRSA board.
We are very proud of Lorette & Keneilwe and wish them both the best in their new ventures.
Western Province Lady Captain’s Society
I attended my 1st Lady Captain’s Society golf competition on the 27th June at Parow GC. I went with Lady Vice Captain Judy Teixeira and our 4ball secured 2nd place; not a bad introduction for the both of us.
West Coast Challenge
The 2nd leg of the West Coast Challenge was at Malmesbury on the 17th July. The 9 hole course is deceptively difficult with almost impossible to read greens.
However, Ntsoti Morojele / Lorette Hegie team won the ladies 2nd place!! Our Millies ladies team is still looking good overall.
The 3rd leg of the challenge will be at Atlantic Beach in August and the team is looking forward to another good round of golf.
League
The Bronze League won 2/3 matches against Westlake on 19 July: 1up, 3/1 and 1 down.
It’s been a tough season for both Silver and Bronze Divisions but everyone tries hard every month and are proud to represent Millies, so well done to all of you.
Congratulations again Bronzies and all the best to everyone for the remaining matches.

On a sad note, the Millies family lost a wonderful man and a friend to many, Rubin Rhoda, earlier in the month. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
Warm wishes & happy golfing always.

Golf Course Report
The golf course is recovering nicely during these winter months with the return of the rains, but water remains a concern going forward.
We have been cutting back on encroaching bushes to open the course up visually and other sections to add sunlight where required. This will be ongoing as we seek to make these small improvements to the course’s overall playability.
I’d like to finish off by saying well done to the course staff for getting our greens back to their very best.
Yours in Golf.
