Milnerton December Newsletter 2022

Newsletter | December 2022

Hi Fellow MGC Members

Tommy Johnson jokingly said to me at the start of February that it is only 11 months to Christmas but while it was a joke back then, here we are with Christmas 2022 around the corner. I am just mentioning this to remind you that it is time to start looking for presents!!! For me – Golf Balls are always good!!!

As you all know by now, our Captain, Colin Jacobs has resigned. We thank you Colin for all your hard work and efforts and we wish you and your Family everything of the best going forward.

You would have observed, the burnt-out section of the old bowling club has been re-roofed and sheeted. As I said last month, this is a temporary solution to house our new fleet of Golf Carts that are due to arrive any day now.

I have had many comments too many to mention here. The reason we have done this is because we had no alternative. We got a Structural Engineer to check the rest of the old bowling club building to see if we could remove some of the walls, but this was not feasible as the roof would collapse. One of the comments I received was that this is a temporary but I am sure it will still be here in 4 to 5 years’ time. I can confirm that this is probably true and the reasons being:-

  • We have applied to lease the Bowling Club Green area where we park. This permission could take up to 12 months before we get a reply. If and when we get this lease it is our intention to build a structure, there to house the Golf Carts and then only can we look at demolishing the complete building to build something new.

Water is still our main problem with little or no water being received from Potsdam. We are looking at all options to resolve.

The road is progressing satisfactory and are still hoping to complete this by year end. I have requested a quotation to complete the remainder of the road and await same.

Upcoming events

As I write this newsletter, my Committee & I are planning the last two (2) competitions for the year. The 29th November, we had the Von Beest Trophy competition. The week after, on the 6th December we have our Medal Finals & Xmas lunch.

Golf highlights in November

Woman of the hour - Karien Van Rooyen

Woman of the hour – Karien Van Rooyen

We had a lot of fun this month starting with The Captain’s Spring Trophy. I was most impressed by the creativity of the ladies.

Our annual Seeff Christmas Mixed Competition on November 13 was a huge success. Congratulations to Gideon & Mandie Odendaal who are this year’s winners and Pearl Mbeje for her 1st hole-in-one!!!

Karien van Rooyen scooped both the Captain’s Spring Trophy and the Victory Cup. I think I’m allowed to call her the woman of the hour.  Well done Karien.

Sick Note

We are thinking about Jenny Bell today and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Golf Course Report,

Dear All,

As the summer months have arrived and the warmer weather hits the course you will notice how we are struggling somewhat due to the lack of water supply. However, all is not lost as the course remains in a good condition mainly due to the greens being irrigated with fresh water.

The greens staff have repaired and flattened quite a few tee boxes. Hopefully we will be using these tee boxes sooner rather than later.

I’d like to request all players that are using golf carts to please do not drive over any bare patches and keep away from the greens as far as possible. White ropes have been placed in from of the greens to encourage this. Please drive to the sides to park and walk to the greens.

Enjoy your game.

Yours in golf.
Garreth Johnston
