Newsletter | February 2022
Hi Fellow MGC Members
One month into 2022 and into the heat of the Cape Summer.
Of course, that brings with it our outdoor cooling breeze, commonly known to Millies golfers as “Suzie” – the South Easterly wind, which has been the downfall of many a Pro golfer, let alone we mere mortals.
Ball washers are fully operational once again.
In the previous newsletter I commented “I have requested that bunker sand become a priority for the green-keeping staff. We need to find a solution to have consistently good sand in the bunkers. We understand that “powdery” sand blows out of the bunkers and the green-side sprinklers cause compacted sand but there is a solution out there and the green-keeping staff must strive to find it.” In addition the thatching on the lips of bunkers needs to be remedied. Please know that Management and the green-keeping staff are working to remedy the bunker situation.
Champion of Champions 2021 is being played on 5th February and I wish all competitors the very best of luck.
Club Champs is booked for the weekends of 5- 6th March and 12-13th March. The lists are on the board so you know what to do. Please note that the Seniors Division is now only limited by age and the minimum Handicap Index is NO LONGER a condition of entry. So if you are 65 years old on the 5th of March you qualify to play in the Seniors Division, regardless of your HI.
Finally, it becomes exasperating for myself and committee members to be approached by aggressive, abusive and, often, intoxicated members who wish to know why we are not doing “this” or fixing “that” at our club. As relevant as your gripe may be, there are societal norms and civil ways of bringing it to our attention. Please, adjust your attitude and have a simple chat with us or drop us an email.
One month to Club Champs means there’s still time to change your swing and buy new clubs (from our Proshop, of course).
Yours in Millies Golf
Colin (aka Jakes) Jacobs

Ladies Captain’s Corner:
I would like to extend my best wishes to all our members for a safe, healthy, and successful 2022.
The ladies section have played their first Monthly Medal on the 15th January as well as our first league fixture for the year on the 25 January with a good start.
- Milnerton vs Erinvale
- Milnerton vs Metropolitan
Milnerton won both matches. Congratulations to our league players for your continued support and commitment and representing our club with pride.
Three of our ladies are playing in the Western Province Golf Silver and Bronze cup tournament at King David Mowbray on the 7th February we wish them well and trust they will do us proud.
Entries for our club Championships are open please enter. It’s good for our golf and to challenge ourselves on all levels not only golf.
Looking forward to good results and camaraderie.

Premier League Update
Golf:
Seniors and Mid-Amateur leagues began on Saturday 22 January. Unfortunately, both teams lost in close matches again! Hopefully our fortunes in the season will take a quick turn for the better and Milnerton can be back up where we belong.
On golf I’d like to say that having over 50000 rounds for 2021 is a great achievement so well done to all at the club.
Course:
The course is remaining in a very playable condition despite major challenges due to the lack of water at the moment. Hopefully we will receive our full complement of water again soon. Also, small projects like laying in sods by the new path on the 13th cannot be completed due to no water. So, remain looking incomplete.
The bunkers are in a bad state, and we are in the process to improve them with new sand etc., but this needs to take priority to the playability of the course. It’s not nice seeing the golfers struggle so and we will get it right in due time.
Yours in Golf,
Garreth Johnston
