Newsletter | June 2022

Hi Fellow MGC Members

I am pleased to report that our club has placed an order for 45 E-Z-GO Golf Carts. These will be refurbished RXV model carts with Lithium Ion batteries and a couple of extras. It is anticipated that with this large fleet we will be able to attract additional Corporate and Fundraising golf days to our calendar. Delivery is expected from early October.

The sub-committee involved with the Burnt Building are progressing steadily with various architectural firms and assimilating the ideas and proposals being submitted.

The satellite halfway house architectural proposal is awaited by that sub-committee. The same Catering sub-committee will be reducing the menu offering in the hope of serving food which is of a higher quality than it has been in the past. Basically, specialising in a few dishes rather than offering many assorted dishes. Various alcohol-based proposals have been put forward for our main bar, but the thinking is to get the catering sorted prior to tinkering with bar contents etc.

The Dune collapse at the 2nd tee box is being scrutinised and some remedial works will be undertaken very soon. Our alien bush offcuts removed from the left of the 12th fairway are being placed on the dunes alongside the 5th, 6th and 12th where needed to assist with the stabilisation of the dunes……as a primary measure. Succulents will be planted later. The 12th fairway shift is happening (as you would have seen).

The committee is looking at erecting a boom/access control alongside the burnt building at a point close to the Practise Chipping Green end of the building. We have had complaints that non-members drive through to park on the North side of our bar, then either go to the beach or to our bar, thinking that it is the rear entrance to Bossa. In addition we are in discussions with SJC Security about amalgamating our security needs with those of Sunset Links Estate, where they currently are employed. The idea is to create a security bubble being MGC and Sunset Links Estate.

The sub-committee looking at the constitutional amendments as well as upgrading our Code of Conduct are getting to grips with the admin-intensive task.

Advertising and Sponsorship: We have a few Tombstones/cement blocks at the Yellow Tee-boxes available for advertising. In addition, we are reviving our Nearest the Pin (NTP) prizes on competition days. We have a few sponsors ready and waiting but do need more. For either of these matters please contact Peter Waison to discuss details.

We have MGC’s centenary approaching in 2025 – if you are an event’s organiser/planner then please email/approach me with a proposal.

Yours in Millies Golf
Colin (aka Jakes) Jacobs

Captain vs Vice Captain Competition

Lady Vice Captain Judy Teixeira & I had such fun putting together our first Captain vs Vice Captain competition; from selecting our teams & team colors to shopping for prizes. The ladies also enjoy these team competitions and the camaraderie. Here are some of their comments:

“Congratulations to new committee for a fun day” Denise Whiffler

“It really was a great fun day and huge thanks to Ntsoti, Judy and Karien for all the spoils and hard work” Les MacFarlane

“Thanks ladies, much appreciated” Jo Elves

“Very enjoyable” Ros Howard

Despite the strong wind, we soldiered on. I quite liked the wind on the front nine, pushing the balls forward. It’s definitely worth taking advantage of because it gets harder playing into the wind on the back nine.

Anyway, back to golf – it was a tight competition and the losing team lost by 1 match. The 2022 winner is……..the Captain’s team.

Thank you ladies for your participation and for making this day memorable.

Interclub Championship

This year’s Interclub Championship was organized by the Boland Ladies Golf at Langebaan 13th – 15th May 2022. We entered four teams, 1 in the C Division and 3 in the D Division. Although we didn’t win, the ladies had fun both on and off the golf course. Our strategy should be to get in more golf games in the year, including other courses & to enter more ladies in the competition to increase our chances. Well done to the ladies that participated this year and
I hope we’ll do better next year.

It is an event that creates opportunities to get to know other members well and to make new friendships.

Marine Shield Trophy Event

Please diarise 14 June for this trophy event. The format is single stableford.

Happy golfing.

Golf and Course Report

Milnerton Newsletter | May 2022

You will notice some changes being made on our golf course:

The 10th hole bunker. The shaping has been finalized and is looking good. Craig & his team have sodded the area and now just for the grass to grow back.

The 12th hole update. Main bushes have been removed allowing us to move the fairway further to the right. The next phases coming will be a lot more work, but exciting times. Watch this space.

The 5th and 6th holes – I have seen people walking down and even playing from the beach and had to ask them not to do so. Please note and advise your friends that this is a “NO ENTRY – ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE AREA”.

There will be a few more bush/tree trimming projects coming up soon.

Other than above – we just need water for now.

Yours in Golf.
Garreth Johnston
