Hi Fellow MGC Members
This Month has just flown by in the blink of an eye!! It has been a very busy and active month. As you would have seen our Road renovations have begun at long last!! As they say “better late than never”. We are hoping to complete the section from the Club House to the Work Shed by the end of the year. If Funds are available, we will do the remainder of the road next year.
The remains of the burnt section of the old Bowling Club has been cleaned up to the best of our ability and we are about to start fitting a new roof and sides next week. This is a temporary solution to store our new fleet of Golf Carts which are due in Mid November.
We are still getting very little water from Potsdam and as you can see we have a real battle on our hands, but the staff are doing the best they can to keep the greens and fairways in good condition. We are talking to many people on ways to resolve our water problems. For example bore holes etc. With the south Easter blowing it is very difficult in preventing the fairways from burning up without sufficient water.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome 2 new staff members to MGC; Alfie who is our new Food & Beverage Manager and Theresa the new assistant in the Pro Shop. We trust that they will both prove to be an asset to MGC and we encourage everyone to support them.
Congratulations to our league teams, especially our Second Challenge who won their League. The South Easter is here and as Gary Player would say, “keep your balls low”.
Only a true Golfer will understand the following:
No matter how bad you are playing it is always possible to play worse

Financially speaking, we are three quarters through the year, and I would like to give members a financial update for the 9 months that have elapsed.
The year commenced on a positive note with the cessation of Covid-related restrictions and a welcome return to normality. But on 17th February a fire destroyed part of the old Bowling clubhouse including our golf carts. Damage to all the assets was settled by the insurers and has been paid out to the Club. 45 new refurbished golf carts have been ordered and should start arriving later ini November.
Golf rounds up to the end of September stand at 39,961 which is similar to 2021 and pre-Covid rounds experienced in 2018 and 2019. 43% of the rounds are played and paid for by visitors.
Overall, the income generated by the Club has been positive and for the 9 months year-to-date and stands at R12 million, R1.6m (27%) favourable compared to last year – most areas within the Club are better off than last year, especially rental from Bossa, but the Halfway house is the exception (but continues to receive focussed attention).
Unfortunately, our expenditure has also increased to R10.9m which is R1.4m (14%) adverse to prior year. Fire-related expenses and insurance excesses; staff bonus payments carried over from 2021; repairs and maintenance; petrol and diesel and other general inflationary pressure have contributed to the increased expenditure, but costs remain well controlled.
The results pre-tax profit for the nine months to September 2022 is R1,083,199 which exceeds the small loss incurred in the prior year.
At the end of September the Club had a favourable bank balance of R24,5m, boosted mainly as result of fire-related insurance proceeds and good trading performance. The replacement of the carts and the repair of the road will reduce the bank balance by about R7m during the remainder of this eyar.
Overall, the Club is in a strong financial position and the results to date have been pleasing (despite the fire in February).
Regards
Harry Todd
Honorary Treasurer

Time seems to fly at this time of the year. It feels like there’s a lot to do but not enough time.
October has been a quiet month as far as our golf competitions but we had a couple of “firsts” to celebrate. Karien van Rooyen and Frelma Schussel both broke 100 for the first time; Karien in the Tuesday Monthly Medal Competition and securing 1st place in the Bronze Division and Frelma in the Captain’s Delight Competition also coming in 1st place.
Watch out for these two in 2023!!!
Ros Howard had an Eagle on the 16th at the Tuesday Monthly Medal competition and she was the winner in the Silver Division.
Congratulations ladies on your wins & to more exciting golf.
November is jam-packed with some interesting events, so please diarise and let’s have fun before we break for the holidays.
We are hosting our annual Seeff Christmas Mixed Competition on November 13. As usual, we promise you a wonderful day with great prizes, lucky draws and a light dinner. All you have to do is choose your (golf) partner.
We will also have three trophy events in November which are always a lot of fun:
Please check the dates on the fixtures list and diarise.
Jenny Maliepaard and Marie Junger were in hospital recently. Wishing you both a speedy recovery and sending love and hugs to all the ladies and our extended Millies family who are not well at this time. You are in our thoughts.

Lady Captain 2022
The seniors of the club meet on Monday morning. We do battle from 08h45 with our traditional weapons consisting of the odd club, lots of balls and fishing rod. It’s amazing that the golf balls we use, like their owners, seem extremely thirsty as they never fail to land in water. By special compensation, oxygen trolleys are allowed. We don’t hit the ball as far as we used to but make up for it by hitting it straighter and straighter as we mature, (That, of course is when we do connect). The game is played in a friendly and relaxed ambiance but nevertheless still very competitive. This is the time we all anticipate the honour of shooting our age. (This is presently Herman Kuhn’s domain)
The competition is always a four-ball Alliance (Stableford Format) with two scores to count on the par fours and fives with three with three to count on the par threes. Afterwards we get together for a liquid refreshment; your choice. You are welcome to partake in the outstanding camaraderie, the hotly contested chirps and the strongly debated post-mortems. The revisiting of some fresh memories of days gone by will be welcomed. There is also a prize-giving to award bragging rights for the week.
Over the past 30 days the winners are:
A special congratulation this month to John Mbambane for his “Hole in One”.
We are presently averaging between 30 to 40 players on a Monday morning. This should increase to around 50 once the Swallows (overseas visitors) return to Cape Town (I nearly said Capistrano). For those who are thoroughly puzzled by this let me give you with the indulgence of Mr Pat Boone the following to reminisce:
When the swallows come back to dear old Cape Town
That’s the day you promised to come back to me
When you whispered “Farewell” in dear old Cape Town
T’was the day the swallows flew out to sea…
Regardless the quality of golf, if you can remember events and music from the sixties you are welcome to join us on Monday morning.
Just send Arie Meulman @ 082 551 2161 or Wesley van Rooyen @ 084 609 1906 at Whatsapp.
Live strong. May your swing be true and the ball fly long.
Until Monday,
Arie Meulman
We would like to say goodbye to our head chef Paul Nienaber who has been with us from 2020. He had spread his wings, and we wish him all the best in his career.
