Hi all members,
Happy to announce that there will be no more work done by a front-end loader, it has its benefits but it sure messes up the course. We have tried to clear the reeds out of the 8th fairway dam but as one can see it caused a right mess, we will have to come up with a different plan to eradicate the dams of the reeds.
The reason for us closing the course on Monday the 28th is because we trying to curb the growth of Poa on our fairways and rough, we are spraying a growth deterrent for the Poa which will stop the Poa from seeding, unfortunately the deterrent cannot be walked onto our greens as it can cause a lot of damage. The reason we want to stop the growth of Poa is when we have no water the Poa grass just goes dormant and creates the huge sand patches that we are now resodding on our fairways. The club will be spraying in the future to try and eradicate the Poa grass altogether, hopefully we will be able to achieve this in time to come.
The good news is that by the time you peruse this report all the seeding of the new tees and the rough will be seeded and I’m happy to report the seeding around the 7th and 13th dam has germinated very well, now all we can look forward to is some sunny days which would help it tremendously.
Our greens have become very hard as it normally does before, we hollowtyne, as it is still too early, we have Vertidrained our greens as this will make the greens more receptive to shots played into it. Hopefully this has helped.
Happy golfing till I bore you all with the next report.
Cheers
Shaun Buchanan

Lady Captain’s Corner
Springtime Shenanigans and Golf Giggles!
Hey, fabulous ladies! Can you feel it? Spring has finally sprung, and guess what’s blossoming more than flowers on the 11th and 12th? Our golf spirits! With recent holidays and some much-needed R&R, most of us are strutting around with an extra bounce in our step. Let’s just say, even the golf balls are rolling with a little more enthusiasm these days.

Wild Encounters on the Course
But wait, there’s more to this story than just golf swings. Brace yourselves for tales of the wild side of our course! If you haven’t heard, we’ve got a pair of celebrity chameleons chilling on the 12th hole. These guys are so famous, they practically have their own fan club. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve spotted a crab on the 9th green and even on the path between the 8th and 9th. Who knew our course was the hottest spot in town for crustaceans?
Oh, and the pièce de résistance – a black snake on the 15th! Don’t worry, Tanya’s brave encounter had us all wondering what in the world she was doing in those bushes. Golf is full of surprises, isn’t it?
Golf Balls and Love Stories
We also had an incident recently that thankfully turned out well. One of our lady members was hit on her leg by a golf ball as she left the 13th green!!! The ball came from a honeymooning couple from the US who were playing behind her. It turns out the gentleman that hit her was so flustered by the mishap that our lovely lady had to calm him down. I suppose these things happen. I’m just relieved our heroine came out unscathed to narrate this story.
Farewell to Friend
We waved goodbye to Sonja Weakley who recently moved to Port Owen up the West Coast with her hubby Kin and doggie Morgan. Sonja’s been a star as past Lady Captain, a league player, and an all-around cheerleader for our ladies section. Our hearts may be a bit heavier, but we’re sending Sonja and her gang all our warmest wishes. We’re counting on future rendezvous with her irresistible company!
Golfing Delights and Challenges
Enough with the adventures, let’s dive into golf. Milnerton was a proud host for the West Coast Challenge’s second leg, and boy, did our course shine in the spotlight! Two matches to go and we’re crossing everything for a triumphant finish. Go, team, go!
Spicing things up, we introduced some sassy competition formats this month – the 3Ball Alliance Waltz and the Captain’s Delight. But we’re always open to more fun ideas, so don’t hold back on those creative sparks!
League Laughs and Anticipation
Rain may have delayed play, but our league season is nearly a wrap. Both teams will have their last showdowns on August 29th. Brace yourselves, because the next newsletter will spill the beans on the final standings. Suspense is our middle name!
Ladies Open Alert!
Ladies, fasten your visors, because come September 21st, we’re rolling out the red carpet for our fabulous Ladies Open Day! Get ready for a day jam-packed with excitement and oodles of fun. The thrill is building up, and trust me, the excitement is oh-so-real!
Shining Stars of the Greens
Before I sign off, let’s give a standing ovation to our Monthly Competition Maestros. Drumroll, please!

Hats off to you, ladies! You keep us all inspired.
That’s a wrap for this newsletter, friends. Keep those swings sassy, those putts precise, and those smiles sparkling. Until next time, let’s make this course our playground of joy!
Cheers,

Seniors’ Corner
August. Another month closer to summer.
On the course we can feel it coming but then like on 14 August it surprises us. Cancellations played havoc with the time sheet, and we could only get four flights going. The rain and wind that was predicted stayed away and it was actually a good golfing day. It reminded me of “Old Blue Eyes” singing Jimmy van Heusen’s song “The September of my Years”.
One day you turn around, and it’s summer.
Next day you turn around, and it’s fall.
And the springs and winters of a lifetime.
Whatever happened to them all.
Congratulations to the following winners of the past month:
- 3 Jul 2023: 122 points. Denise Whiffler, Hugh Neeson, Callie Vorster and John Mbambane.
- 7 Aug 2023: 94 points. Bokkie Thompson, Ken Anderson, Peter Seifritz and Arie Meulman.
- 14 Aug 2023: 95 points. Terry van Rooyen, Wesley van Rooyen and Herman Kuhn.
- 21 Aug 2023: 90 points. Callie Vorster, Jenny Whittal, Beverly Appersela and Barbara Schwartz.
- 28 Aug 2023: 101 points. Terrie and Wesley van Rooyen, Bruce Wynton and John Dransfield
The following well-wishes go to:
- Terrie and Wesley van Rooyen, bon voyage and enjoy your holiday overseas. Return safely.
- Ken Anderson, hope your eye operation went well. Looking forward to see you on the course.
- Hugh Neeson, wishing you were here to light up our favorite Government Owned Institution.
- Johnny de Lange, hope you’re well. Come on Johnny, show us your leg.
- Alex Erwin don’t let work keep you from enjoying your retirement.
- To the “Swallows”, wherever you are. (Come back to Capistrano) The sunshine is back with a gentle South-Easter. Perfect golf weather in the paradise called Cape Town.
What better song can there be than; (With permission from Old Satchmo)
I see skies of blue
No clouds of white
The course, a green hue
Perfect to hit the ball out of sight
Oh, what a wonderful World
For those who have an Interest. I will be doing the draw in Wesley’s absence.
Remember: A “gimme” is best defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well. Wishing you the perfect swing, be that in golf or the Charleston.
Greetings
Arie
