Good day fellow Members of the Milnerton GC,

This month would be my 2nd month as Captain and it’s been a privilege to serve you the members and will do my very best to inform you on the happenings at the club.

As you all may know, the pipeline is being installed and hopefully will be finished by the end of June.

The Centenary year planning is going well, which is in the hands of our committee. (Brent Viljoen, Lorette Hegie and Justin De Allende). If any member would like to assist, please feel free to contact Brent and/or the committee.

Winter is here, so please take note of the following with regards to Golf Carts:

  • During our committee meeting concerns were raised in regards to golf carts driving too close to the tee boxes and greens. Please be aware of this and try to keep at least 15 metres away from tee box and greens. The marshals will be reporting any instances to the Manager and committee if you do not adhere to our plea to keep away from these areas.
  • Our other concern is, cars driving down to the 10th during the day to please adhere to the speed limit of 30km. We had an incident 2 weeks ago when a golf cart that shot out from behind a bush and had a bumper bash with a car.

On a brighter note, I would like to congratulate Giles Buchanan and Weyers Jansen Van Rensburg that played Seniors IPT for Western Province and Won. Well done guys and keep the Milnerton flag flying high.

You’re Captain,
Peter Waison

We welcome the following new members

Newsletter | April 2025

Good day fellow Members of the Milnerton GC,

Firstly, I would like to thank Billy O’Brien and his fellow Committee members for their service this past year.

Being on the committee is a thankless task, and with an all-new incoming committee, it’s going to be a tough to get into the groove and to get going. Although I have no doubt we will be running smoothly in no time.

Your New Committee Members are:

  • Captain: Peter Waison
  • Vice-Captain: Alan Pearson – Handicaps / Food & Beverage
  • Treasurer: Weyers Jansen Van Rensburg
  • Lorette Hegie: House & Surrounds / Centenary Planning
  • Justin De Allende: Food & Beverage / Centenary Planning
  • Dwain Heldsinger: Golf Course / Sunset Links & Bossa Liaison
  • Brent Viljoen: Turf Equipment / Centenary Planning & Preparation / Marketing / Advertising and Sponsorship
  • Quinten Coetzer: Golf / Leagues / New Member Applications

Our Centenary Year Festival week will be in November from the 3rd to the 8th.

We as the New Committee have a lot to learn in the upcoming months. Our priority will of course be to make the Centenary a success. As I write this, Plans for this event are moving full steam ahead.

In the coming weeks, the new water pipeline between the 13th and the 17th holes will be installed and will take approximately 2 months to complete.

Harry Solomon league will be starting in May.

Congratulations to the New Ladies Captain Karien Van Rooyen.

Other than that, I don’t have much to report on just yet, other than the qualities of a Great Member below:

The qualities of a great member:

A very erudite member of this wonderful community of ours send me this which I thought was very interesting!

You want to be a good club member, so what do you do? Here are ten qualities of a great club member:

  1. Contribute Your Unique Skills – You all came together with a common interest or passion. But each of you also has unique skills and backgrounds. Are you a finance person? Have excellent webmaster skills? Utilising your skills can also significantly help the Club.
  2. Be Positive – Always have the betterment of the Club in mind. When you question something, do it towards improvement or change. Nobody likes a complainer. Remember, if members push collectively in a positive direction, others will gladly join in; offer positive feedback.
  3. Respect – Respect the mission of the Club. Respect the officers (remember they are probably volunteers contributing their talents and unique skills). Respect the privacy of members. Everyone joined the Club for a reason which might not be yours.
  4. Communicate with Confidence – Great team players communicate their ideas honestly and clearly and respect others’ views and opinions on the team. Clear, effective communication done constructively and respectfully is the key to getting heard.
  5. Trust by Verify – We continuously see the news on the latest club issues. As a club member, you do have a responsibility to understand and question and not repeat rumours. Your opinion is that: just an opinion. Remember you have not walked in another’s shoes.
  6. Positively Build your Club’s Community – Create a welcoming club. Members are typically on different journeys with their skills or desires. Help these club members grow and advance in the Club. Be a bridging vs. an exclusive Community.
  7. Teach – Grow the members’ skills. Understand the technical side of your sport. Use your unique talent, actively helping the membership.
  8. Embrace all your Stakeholders – Understand how your Club can mutually benefit and contribute, to your well-being, the local community, close neighbours, or a broader group or organisation. Be a good citizen, and things will be much easier.
  9. Consistent and Reliable – Displaying genuine commitment and reliability is a great way to drive your Club forward. Create positive relationships within your Club and do this consistently.
  10. Reliable Volunteer – Don’t be the volunteer that never volunteers! They volunteer in name but never show up. When you volunteer, do more than asked, adapt quickly and easily, come with a 110% commitment to getting things done. Remember, you are either part of the problem or the solution, don’t be a problem.

Embrace these attributes, and there is no doubt that your Club will move forward.

This is just something our Club Should be.

Thank you,

Peter Waison
Your Captain

From the Lady Captain

Hello All

Another sad start to my Newsletter on the passing of our dearest Lady Member, Marie Junger. Marie will be sorely missed. She was part of the Ladies for many many years and later with the Seniors. We wish Rolf well at this sad time of losing his life partner.

Sadly, this will be my last Newsletter as I am stepping aside as Captain for the coming year. Our Travel itinerary for this year will not make it right to stand in a position if I am absent.

The last year and a bit was an exciting time along with its challenges, but I honestly enjoyed being of Service to the Ladies of the Milnerton Golf Club. We had some fun events.

I wish the new Committee and the incoming Lady Captain all the very best for the rest of this year. I will be around to be of any assistance or help & advise.

We wish the following Ladies a very Happy & Blessed Birthday in May:

  • 7th May – Denise Liang
  • 12th May – Marijke Rietveld
  • 25th May – Karen Robey
  • 27th May – Bettye Walker

The Match Play has been done and the rounds will resume shortly. This will be put on the Social WhatsApp group.

This year there will be cut off time for each of the divisions.

Those that cannot make the round due to various reasons will unfortunately forfeit the game and the opponent goes through to the next round.

All the best to all the players. There are some tough games to be played.

May’s Calendar for you to diarize for the forthcoming events:

  • 2-5 May – Interclub (Milnerton not represented this year)
  • 6th May – Medal & Putting
  • 13th May – League / Single Erinvale
  • 16th May – WPSWGS @ Erinvale
  • 20th May – Match Play
  • 27th May – 3 Ball Alliance – YellowBall
  • 24 – 28 May – WPSWGS Nationals

That’s me over and out completely. Thank you everyone for your Love, Patience & Kindness during my Captaincy. It was truly a Blessing for me.

Judy Rae Teixeira
Lady Captain 2024

From the Driving Range

With another season behind us, let’s have a look at where we started.

Where we are now.

The Range has come a long way. And it is a pleasure to hit from. The range will be going through its seasonal price change from the 1st of May.

  • Member Bucket – R30 for 30 Balls
  • Affiliated Bucket – R40 for 30 Balls
  • Visitor Bucket – R50 for 30 Balls

The range will also be opening a membership where you can sign up for 12 months and have a limited number of balls each month at a great discount. This hopefully encourages some good practice through the winter to be ready for next season.

The range will be going into winter times now when we will operate from 8am – 5pm (Mon–Sat) and then 8am – 4pm (Sunday and Public holidays).

Hope to see you out there!

Regards
Arno Marais

Committee | Milnerton Golf Club

Trials for Harry Solomon have started, our 1st game is a bye on the 17th of May. However the 1st weeks trials seem to have gone very well with some exceptional scores from the Pretorius brothers, might ask to help out at Premier.

Went out to watch some of the top 16 lads play against each other in match play. Nice to see the youngsters pull through on some wins. Brett van Rooyen beating Weyers our current 2025 club champ 3&2 was a great game to watch. Kyle Lee beating Ryan 6&4 unbelievable golf from him today.

As for the rest of the golf/league news. Shaun Buchanan will be assisting myself on the sub-committee for leagues, reason behind this decision is I feel the golfers should concentrate on golf and let management concentrate on managing the golf. Shaun has years of experience behind him and we could only benefit from his input.

The competitions for May have been approved just waiting on the final decision regarding the monthly Par 3 competition which will be held at the end of every month, t.b.c., I will discuss this with Alan,Weyers & Dwayne and try and find a profitable solution for this as I feel it could benefit the club and many ways.

Have a great month ahead.

Energy and persistence conquer all things

Benjamin Franklin

Quinten

Newsletter | March 2025

As this is my last report after nearly 3 years and with the AGM around the corner, I confirm that I am stepping down as Captain and from the Committee. I will always be available to assist our Club which I have done for the past 40 years. It has been my great pleasure to have served you, the Members, as your Captain. While there were many projects that I would like to have completed, I believe that as a committee we have achieved much.

Some of our achievements are:

  • Purchase of 50 golf carts
  • Upgrade of entrance to Club, all offices & Pro Shop
  • Enlargement of dam on the 7th hole
  • Upgrade of pump house
  • New dry room to store all electrical equipment
  • Extension on the back of the pump house to house our new generator & filters
  • Upgrade of Halfway house
  • Temporary house for golf carts
  • New golf cart pathways
  • Upgrade of road to the 10th
  • Replaced complete piping system including new filters in pump house, pre filters and floatation system.
  • 2 new pumping systems, including housing at the 7th dam and at the freshwater storage tank.
  • Installation of AOX plant
  • Installation of tee box signage and tee box markers
  • Extension of 2nd Green

With the AGM around the Corner (8 April 2025) – You the Members need to think long and hard on who you propose and also on whom you vote for as these Committee Members need to make serious decisions that will affect your Club for many years to come. They will be responsible to run a R30 million+ business.  Remember this when you propose and vote for someone. Remember that it is not a popularity contest, but it’s “Your Club”.

Good luck to the new captain and his committee as there is much to be done and remember together you are strong, divided you will fail, good luck to the BOG.

I hope that you and the committee can form a strong working relationship and be able to bring this great golf club to new heights.

A special thanks goes out to the following for all your support over the years:

  • You the members remember you are very special people, and you make our club what it is – SPECIAL,
  • Mark Schacht for sharing all his wisdom with us,
  • All the staff in the Pro shop, Bar and kitchen,
  • Our greenkeeping staff that we seldom appreciate your long hours regardless of the weather.

REMEMBER – The people around you make all the difference when it comes to creativity.

You need people who are willing to prepare as well as to dream. and you need people who are willing to be as tenacious as you are in searching for answers.

Happy Golfing

Captain

From the Lady Captain

Hello All

I begin this newsletter on a very sad note in the passing of our Beloved Long Serving Lady Member – Jenny Malipaard. Jenny served on our Committee for many years, always adding value. She was the first to organise charity giving, especially the sandwiches for our Caddie Staff. Jenny will be sorely missed. May her dear Soul RIP.

On the 18th March we held our annual Tuesday Men’s school and the Ladies Group. We had 54 players take part. It was an amazing day – well organised – well supported and well enjoyed by all. Alfie – the Burgers were amazing.

March was a relatively quiet Month in comparison to Feb. We did however play two League games – the 4th and the 25th. League still not going too well for us – we did have a win though and some all square games and unfortunately one dq’d game. We persevere on.

Our Fixtures for April and May are up on our Notice Board as well.

We wish the following two ladies a very Happy Birthday:

  • 4 April – Denise Whiffler
  • 13 April – Ntsoti Morojele

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy & Blessed Easter. If you are travelling – travel with precaution and be safe.

From the Driving Range

The range is looking better than ever! After a busy Club Champs, the back tee took a real beating however recovering well. The max distance is +/- 200m for the next coming weeks as we slowly move our way back again.

A New face has also now joined us, Chante Swart. Chante comes from Hermanus and is very eager to start playing golf. Come say Hi and start chatting some golf with her! I think she loves it.

Monthly Activation.

Thursday 24th April 17:00 for 30min.

I will host an activation for 4 people each month on Thursdays at 17:00 for 30mins, we will discuss the structure of each department throughout the months and each member will have time to practice the movements with guidance.

This is a free service and a means of helping those who continue to struggle with the dynamics of the swing.

Message me on 066 254 0004, first comes first serve.

Cheers for now

Newsletter | February 2025

I trust you are all ready for our Club Champs this year and who the winners will be?? I believe we have more possible candidates this year in the A Div.
Are the Young Guys up to it or will it be one of the Old Dogs? Who will triumph – only time will tell.
All the best to you that participate – It’s not in the winning but being a part of the challenge good luck to you all

Our Greens Management and Staff are working extremely hard to prepare the course in the best possible condition for the Club Champs. With our current water situation it has mad work difficult and we thank them for their efforts.

Unfortunately Craig Helstrip, our Green Keeper, has decided to move on to further his career after being with the Club for 20 years. We thank him for all he has done and wish him success in his new career choice.

The Project that I failed to get done and still believe it would enhance our Golf Club.

Projects we completed this month: Pump house at the 7th Dam and one at the Fresh Water Dam.

With the AGM upon us I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the Committee Members for their time and effort put into the running of our Golf Club. Serving as a committee member is one of the toughest volunteer roles of all and it is performed with dedication and tenacity. On both professional and personal level.

From the Range, Arno has continued to enhance the Driving Range with the addition of a Bunker and a Putting Green. For those who haven’t visited the Driving Range, we encourage you to bring your Clubs and pay him a visit.

It’s easier to let go of something if you’re going to get something better. You don’t let go just for the sake of letting go. You let go only because tomorrow looks better than yesterday.

Happy Golfing

Newsletter | January 2025

Here we are – we survived another year.

I wish you, the Members and all our Management & Staff, good health for 2025

We as a committee achieved very little in 2024 as the year was spent mainly discussing whether we should rent out the Members Lounge to a restaurant Franchise or not and how we should vote on the changes to the Constitution.

It has split our committee in half as one half believe another restaurant was a good idea and the other half a very bad idea??

Why would the Members want to give away their treasure for very little gain.

It has also divided the Committee with the BOG. It is very sad state of affairs when you are voted in by you the Members to take care of the Club and all that is done is waste a whole year fighting for something that you the members don’t want in the first place.

Work / Projects completed during 2024:

  • Golf Cart pathways on the 6th, 7th and the 16th /17th
  • Repairs on the 3rd and extended the 2nd pathway
  • Pumphouse upgrade completed with new filters, new pipes, new electric cabinets and wiring, new doors and extension on back to house the filters and new generator
  • New pre filter installed and started building protective houses over Pump and valves beside Dam
  • Installation of Fountain on the 7th Dam
  • Halfway house at 10th – cut back all the trees and shrubs. Painted both outside and inside. New work top and new cabinet plus new flooring in kitchen and eating area
  • Cultivated new gardens around halfway house
  • Upgraded pathway to toilets.

It has been a tough year for Craig and the green keeping staff.  As you should all know, we put in a complete new filter system because the old system blew up.   It was about 25 years old.  The quality of the water we are receiving from Pots Dam is full of rubbish so much so that we have had to put in a pre-filter.  This is also blocking up and having to be cleared on a regular basis.  With all our Filtering some of the rubbish is still getting through the system and blocking up the sprinklers around the course and when this happens it puts the whole automation system out so they are having to switch the system on by hand and this also means that we are having a person on at night to keep checking for any blockages. Thanks Craig and your team for all your hard work

Here’s hoping that 2025 will be a better year for our golf course and the water supplied will improve

Wishing you all good health

Does anyone know what happened to the 2 oyster catchers that were hatching on the Golf Course last  year ?

Just saying………

Mutual manners matter, thanking somebody politely, not taking things for granted. Thanking somebody costs nothing and yet means so much. Sharing and caring must be prioritized as the most important asset.

Happy Golfing

Newsletter | December 2024

Here we are another year gone by. As you get older you wonder where they go! You start the year with great plans and then you blink and the year has passed and it is always disappointing when you don’t achieve what you set out to do.

A couple of projects that I was hoping to have completed was the wall along the lefthand side of the First Fairway, but we are still waiting for a decision from the Environment Department. The changes to the Constitution what seemed like an easy task has turned out to be a difficult one BUT we are nearly ready to put it out to you the Members.

It seems that there is still a lot of people out there that are not sure as to what is going to happen with our Club as far as a new restaurant taking over of our Players Lounges.  As I have explained in the past the proposals have to be accepted by the BOG and if they accept then there will be a SGM where all the Members have the opportunity to vote and it will be YOU the Members that accept or reject, so be assured NOTHING can happen without your approval.  Hope this puts your minds at ease.

As the Great Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu said : “Look Out – Look Out”

Well we say to the North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un – don’t ever think of firing one of your missiles in our direction because we are ready for you!! We have our very own rocket launcher ready and waiting – so bring it on – Our new Pre Filter!

We are hoping that this pre filter system will help stop our sprinklers from blocking up so we can water all the brown patches.

Our new Pre-Filter – Rocket Launcher

Some of the complaints I have had during the year :

  1. The Fairways need to be levelled out – they are too bumpy.
  2. The view from our Lounge could be improved – OK I will request that Table Mountain be moved a couple of 100 meters to the right or bring Robben Eiland closer.
  3. The holes on the greens are always in the wrong places.

A big thank you to Arno for all his hard work during the year on the improvements he has made on the Driving Range.

Congratulations to our League Teams over this year for their Success and Enthusiasm. Our Premier League put up a good fight to bring home the Cup for a Third Year but failed on the Line.

Well done to the Players in the Westcoast Challenge Team – both Men & Ladies – they brought the Trophies home to Milnerton.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the Members for your support throughout this year. A huge thank you to the BOG, Committee, Management & Staff for their continued support.

We are running out of time

Being over informed by Technology

We are running out of space

With everybody constantly running away to get somewhere

We are running out of matter not knowing what really matters!!

Happy Golfing

And here we are …… December 2024

Our Christmas Mixed was an outstanding event hosted by Steven & Karien Van Rooyen, who truly put together a day filled with loads of fun and laughter. Sincere thanks and appreciation for the day and your contribution in it.

We welcome quite a few new Lady Members: Anne Gales, Nicola Anstey, Susanne Lengerke and Christine Matti. We welcome you with open arms and look forward to meeting you all one day soon.

The Westcoast Challenge was held over the last two months or so and it is with huge pleasure that I can say the Ladies brought the Trophy Home. Well played to Lorette, Roz, Tanya, Casey & Megan. You did us Proud. Congratulations to the Men as well in bringing home their Trophy !

Milnerton Stars !!!

Congratulations goes to Karien Van Rooyen on winning our first comeback Match Play Competition.

We haven’t had this for the Ladies for some time, but it is now back! We took a while to get through the different Matches, and for next year, Kyle will help us set structured matches to play that hopefully all can play and not have to forfeit their games.

Well done Karien – I need to just add – her game against our reigning Club Champ was phenomenal. I play with Karien a lot – I have never seen her play like she did that day! Well deserved Karien.

To our Runner Up – Ntsoti –  well done to you as well for getting to the Final.

Our thoughts go out to Bettye Walker who suddenly lost her husband this week. Bettye our thoughts & prayers go out to you at this very sad time. You have travelled back to the USA, but know that you are close to us in Spirit.

We are having our Medal Finals and the rest playing Single Stableford along with Christmas Lunch on Tuesday, 3 December, with 42 Ladies attending. This always proves to be a well attended function as the Ladies bring Salads & Deserts. This year we have from Afrikaans Potatoe Salad to German Salad & Tabouleh Salad to go with Halloumi Salad as well as Pea Salad along with German Carrot Salad. Desserts too many to mention. So ladies this should entice you for next year! It is for sure a “Spread of Note”.

In closing I would like to say a very big thank you to my Committee – each one of you

  • Karien – Vice Captain
  • Lorette – Lady President
  • Les – Hon Secretary
  • Sylvia – Tuesday Comps & Trophies
  • Denise – Our Interior Decorator
  • And to Past committee members – your input is always greatly valued.

This year has been a tough one, but we made it through. Here’s hoping and trusting that 2025 will be a better sailing year! The Committee are amazing and their enthusiasm encourages me every single day.

“THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART” – Without you all I would not have made it !

To all our Lady Members – Wishing you a Blessed & Happy Christmas – Enjoy time with your Families and may 2025 be a Prosperous one.

Here we are at the end of October and another year nearly done with.

For those of you that don’t know, I arrived here in SA exactly 42 years ago this Month in October 1982. I came for a contract that was scheduled to take 8 months and here I am – forgot to go back!

As you will see the hollow Tining of the fairways and tee boxes has been completed and the Course is looking great.

We had a bit of a scare during the month as Potsdam stopped supplying water for a week but luckily enough, we had sufficient storage to be able to keep watering the Course. The good news – our supply has been restored and we have an abundance of water but never a dull moment just when we thought all was good, we received a batch of water from Potsdam full of plastic that fowled up our new filters and that then blocked up the sprinklers just in case this happens again we are fitting a new filter in the supply line

There are a few very ugly white covers on the repaired areas on the fairways we have dug out the bare patches and reseeded thus the covers are there to protect the seeds from the birds. Please do not drive your Golf Cart over these. We are trying very hard to improve your Golf Course and avoiding ALL BARE PATCHES will go a long way to help with restoration. Raking Bunkers, repair pitch marks and fill in your divots are a given.

Work in progress:

  • Supply and install a new boiler as the existing boiler is rusted and about to collapse.
  • Ablution Facility – We are busy with council to see if we can get planning permission.
  • We will have to replace the main irrigation pipe supply line from the 13th fairway to the 17th green but we will only start in April 2025.
  • As you can see our halfway house on the 10th has had a bit of a upgrade by painting inside and outside also our new gardens are looking good.

Our driving range is really looking great thanks to Arno and Frankie for all their hard work there. New green and bunker is waiting for you to practice.

Change to our staff:

  • Cameron Johnson is now responsible for all work on the golf course. So take your complaints to him – Good luck Cammy.

Mutual manners matter, thanking somebody politely, not taking things for granted. Thanking somebody costs nothing and yet means so much. Sharing and Caring must be prioritized as the most important assist.

Happy Golfing

From  Me to All Ladies

One barely does a letter for month end and the next is upon us. October has been a busy month with November looking to be even busier. Many of the Clubs are having their Open days in these two Months. Wish we could attend all, but humanly impossible.

We held our League Braai this month and what an incredible time we had!! The Stoep Gang gave up their spot for us out on the verandah and we had our very own braaier Casey – thanks for that Case – you produced the best ever steak & chops !!

The WestCoast Challenge Girls make their way to Atlantic Beach on Sunday 3 November. We wish them all the very best. To date we are lying 2nd and we hope to gain top position. The last game will be on the 24 November in Langebaan.

Our Christmas Mixed coming up on Sunday the 10th November sponsored by Leap Frog is going to be one fun filled day with amazing Prizes and there will be a few auctions. There are a few slots open off the 10th. So book your slot if you haven’t already!! Bookings can be made through the Pro Shop.

Save the Date:

  • Tuesday 3 December Medal Final and Christmas Lunch
  • Tuesday 10 December – our last game for 2024 – Gift Day

Sonya, our dearest friend and ex Lady Captain, know that you are continuously in our hearts, thoughts & prayers for your continued healing and strength through this tough time for you and your family. We love you.

Trust this finds you all well. The month has flown by so fast – where to I have no idea. So not much to report on.

We have been busy completing the pump house where the generator has been installed and everything is wired up and ready for action. We still have some touching up on our pipework and filters.

The green keeper and staff have been busy touching up around the Greens which is an ongoing task. Please we request when driving your Golf Cart – not to drive within 10 meters of the Greens.

Hollow Tinning the Greens is now complete, the staff will now begin with the hollow tinning of the fairways and Tee Boxes. All in all, our course is looking good.

Our Ladies hosted their Open Day on the 19th September. I was asked to address them before they went on their way. It was my great pleasure to do so, gathering all the Lady Players on the practice Putting Green before driving off to the respective holes and for me to drive around the course during play to ensure all was well with them. From the ladies I spoke with everyone was happy and enjoyed the day and our Course. The Prize Giving and Dinner was excellent with plenty of compliments on the Food – well done to Alfie and his team for producing a delicious meal. A special thank you to the Ladies Committee for putting together an exceptional and professional Day.

In closing I would like to send a message to all that are going through tough times. I don’t want to name personally, but you know if you are.

Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers, and I know words come easy, but we do care and want to be there for you.

We cannot always control everything that happens to us in this life, but we can control how we respond. Many struggles come as problems and pressures that sometimes cause pain. Others come as temptations, trials & tribulations.  No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life. One thing that we can do for each other is to SUPPORT one another.

Look Forward to catching up on Tuesday 8 October.

Newsletter | September 2024

I have been requesting from you the Members to put suggestions forward on what you would like me to present in my Captain’s Letter each month, as it is hard to always find topics of interest. I have received little or nothing from the Members, however I did receive communication from one Member in the form of an email and I thank you for the email referring to my letter of last month. He is perplexed which generally means that he is confused or baffled.

  1. My reference that the Saturday Morning Field do not Rake Bunkers and as Caesar said “what’s written is written”. The results of my statement had the desired effect as the Bunkers are now been raked – well done guys now try and fill in more divots and repair your pitch marks
  2. My holiday to Mauritius to celebrate the Twins, Casey & Megan,40th Birthday – not been relevant to Milnerton Golf Club. I see it as very relevant as the Club is The Members. My report goes out to around 1000 members, so what is news to one may not be of interest to others. Note the Twins are our only Lady Single Figure Golfers at MGC and Casey is our reigning club champion for the past five years. She represented Milnerton at Clovelly in the Champion Of Champions and came 4th . Well done Casey.

Work in Progress:

  • Pump House all work near completion. Only the AOX pipe work to complete and with all our dams full we are ready to switch on the sprinklers as soon as they are required.
  • Golf Cart pathways now completed.
  • The Fountain in the 7/13th Dam installed and looking good.
  • With the cleanup around the halfway house and painting of same it is also looking good.

Well done to our Harry Solomon Boys on winning another Trophy for our Club.  It sure was a nail-biting finish

Our Course has stood up well with all the rain that we have had this winter. The 18th fairway has taken a bit of a beating. It has been impossible to get the water off the fairway because of the high tides and high-water table. Hopefully we will get a few dry days soon and all the panic will be over until something else happens.

You ask what the latest is on the completion of the wall along the first fairway. It has gone through about 12 Departments and is now with some Department that will decide on what penalty we should pay because we disturbed the Doons! Can you believe it? We try to protect the doons and they want to penalize us. They are happy to see the doons wash into the sea and do nothing and if you try and protect then you are penalized. We have lost about 6 meters of ground along the 2nd fairway up to the 5th Tee Box and the Environment Department that are supposed to “protect” them. They do nothing and refuse to let us protect our Golf Course. If anyone reading this can advise or help, we would be very grateful.

Remember that you have your way. I have my way.  As for the right way, And the only way, It does not exist!!

Happy Golfing

From the Desk of the Lady Captain

A hearty hello to everyone. What a Month August has been! I blinked my eyes and the last week of August was upon me! Before we realize it we will be wishing everyone a Blessed Christmas.

August has been a month like most of us have never ever experienced before, with the endless cold rainy days – and today with snow on Table Mountain.

The Ladies Division hardly had a game of Golf this month. Fortunately, the Club have allowed the Ladies to play on Thursday 29 August as we missed our Trophy Tuesday game again due to the heavy rains. We have a bumper turnout with 18 ladies. WOW wish we had that every week.

As previously mentioned, we have not done well this year with League and ended up bottom of the Log in both the 1st and 5th Divisions. We are however coming back next year with much determination to climb the Log Ladder. We are hoping to introduce some new players to our League Squad.

We welcome to our Ladies Division a new Member – Louise Hinds, we look forward to you joining us very soon on a Tuesday albeit in the beginning for the prize giving to get to know us.

Our Match Play is drawing to closure, and I want to congratulate Ntsoti who has gone through to the Final. She beat Deirdre on sudden death after playing 20 holes. Ntsoti will either be playing Karien or Casey in the Final who are yet to play their Match. Again, the rain hasn’t been in favour as well as other matters, but we look forward to our Final. We will announce when the Final will happen so that we all can be in support of the Final Players.

Casey represented Milnerton at the Champion of Champions on Sunday 1 September at Clovelly. Congratulations Case on securing 4th position.  Well played.  You really are an ambassador for Milnerton Golf Club.

Our Open Day is drawing very close now – 19 September. We have almost a full field – 4 x four balls yet to fill. Amazing Sponsors and amazing prizes.

A reminder that we have, Arno, from Loots Golf & Tours, who offers lessons on our new upgraded Driving Range at Milnerton Golf Club.

That’s it from me for now – wishing everyone better happier golfing days in September.

A couple of months ago we were praying for Rain and here we are now praying for the rain to stop. I left for a holiday to Mauritius on the 7th July and the moment I left someone turned the taps on and it has not stopped raining since then.  Just proves that you cannot be left alone for one minute!!!

With all the water on the course our staff are working hard to keep the course playable and minimize the damage. Well done to all involved.

To all of you that are playing to please respect your course and try and avoid all the wet areas and drive in the rough. It will do you good to walk to your ball. Remember to fill in your divots, repair your pitch marks and rake the bunkers.

I have noticed – I am off first off the 10th on a Saturdays, and find most of the bunkers unraked – this means the morning field have no respect for your course.

Work in progress:

  • Pump House – installation of the new Filters and pipe work, reinstallation of the AOX plant
  • New Golf Cart path around the 16th green and 17th Tee boxes as well as the Tee box on the 6th hole

Our holiday in Mauritius was great and very relaxing. The reason for the holiday apart from wanting to get away for a break was to celebrate Casey and Megan’s 40th Birthday.

For those of you that haven’t been to Mauritius – the saying goes – “it is great so long as you look out and not look in”.

Our Day started with breakfast, approx. 10 courses. I ate everything I could find, then off to the beach. First cocktail 10am with another couple before lunch which was between 1 and 2 pm with a bottle or two of wine. Back to the beach for another couple of cocktails. Then to make room for supper, we did some swimming and paddling. We played a game of Boule on the beach –  Boys vs Girls. Then off to shower before supper and with supper another bottle or two and then a night show they put on a different show each night with some dancing after

We played 2 games of Golf. The first at Mont Choisy. Beautiful course. Wide fairways with lots of undulations and doglegs. The greens left a bit to be desired. It looked like they had been top dressed with sand but overall it was great. The second was right down South – The Heritage. Took us an hour and a half drive from our hotel. It is reported to be their No 1 Course on the Island.  Mercedes Benz held their Semi Final World Golf Comp there, where we were represented by Casey Hattle on 2 occasions and Leon Louw on another occasion. So Casey had a big advantage on us.  I must say the Heritage was a wonderful experience. I would recommend anyone going to Mauritius to put the Heritage on your list to play.

By the way both these courses we played – the Half Way House consisted of a jar of biscuits and a decanter of juice laid between the 9th and 10th with no stops.

For the Twin’s Birthday Celebration – Dawn Blackshaw treated the whole family to a day on one of her Sister’s Catamarans, Oceane Cruises. We left our hotel early that morning to Point Maurice to board the Catamaran. It took us out to Devil’s Point where we saw dolphins. Some went swimming and snorkeling overboard. The crew did us a braai on board. We were spoilt rotten with fish, crayfish, steak, chicken and salads galore. After the Braai they took us to Ile aux Cerfs where we disembarked and the twins went Paragliding and Judy took the kids on the rubber duck couch ride while the rest of us lay on the beach. We were truly spoilt that day thank you Dawn.

Back home and the rain still hasn’t stopped!!

To continually keep growing we often need to accept the apologies we wont receive. Forgiveness is not a weakness it’s something we need to give ourselves as holding a grudge only hurts the person holding it.

Happy Golfing

Captain

Lady Captain’s Corner

Hello everyone, how fast did July pass us by?

Myself and the family had a fantastic time in Mauritius and our timing could not have been any more perfect with the storm that hit Cape Town while we were away.

We played at Mont Choisy which is French for My Choice, and we played at Le Chàteau, Heritage, where Mercedes used to Host their semi finals.

Mont Choisy

Le Chateau Heritage

One thing that stood out for us at these two Courses was how well they were maintained.

Divots filled, Bunkers Raked – we come home to ours and the first Bunker I get into on the 10th – 3 different sets of footprints unraked! Why some course can get it right, but we cant. Sad

Two Match Play teams have not yet been able to play their game – waiting on our course to dry up a bit. As soon as these have been played – we will begin with the Semi-Finals.

We would like to send our well wishes to some of our Ladies recovering from operations and sicknesses. Liz, Bev and Sonja Weakly – we wish you a speedy recovery and healing.

If there is anyone else that I have not mentioned – the same for you – and please let us know.

Our Milnerton Open will be held on the 19th September. Invites will be going out soon.

Milnerton Members will be given first option before it is opened up.  If you want to play Grab a Time, as you well know it is very popular and time slots are filled in no time.

Our course has been extremely wet with the storm we had. It has over the previous year’s been wet but I can’t remember it being this wet. Picture was taken from my Neighbour’s house.

In closing I would like to mention about our Club’s Friday Night Buffet suppers. Alfie and the Kitchen staff cook amazing meals. There is a Member’s Draw of up to R10 000 – you have to be present to win it. Roz was a recipient a few months back. The last Friday of the Month they have a live band and the atmosphere and vibe is lively. Come along and join us.

That is it from me for this month. Not much to report on as not much golf has been played in July.

From The Driving Range

Poor weather has caused a great eagerness to play. With the course soaked and very few dry sunny days, we all have the urge to strike a ball. The Driving range will be open should weather permit it, Arno is keeping the range clean and the grass lush to feed that urge of a well struck golf ball.

There is also a lot of progress going on at the back of the range with the new road being built. But I am sure many have seen the new short game area in progress which will make a once poor looking area into one that everyone can enjoy. Along with the new chipping area, A new safety net has been put up to help protection for the cars and the road has received some work but will get some more love on a alter stage.

The Range is open from 8am – 5pm when the last buckets are sold, summer times will start from 1 Sept when the range will operate from 7:30am – 5:30pm when the last buckets are sold.

Arno offers great lessons to members at R700/ph or a package of R3000 for 5hours to be used anywhere in the game. Please support your local Pro as he supports the club by consistently offering a fantastic facility and ever growing.
